Big Boys

“Ace of Diamonds Gang” by Owen Marshal "

Essay Question:

Analyse how symbols have been used to develop your understanding of people OR ideas in at least TWO short written texts that you have studied?

In the short story “Ace of Diamonds Gang by Owen Marshal”, the writer often uses symbols to represent complex or significant ideas. In this essay I will analyse the symbols of the Ace of Diamonds and the Libiary card, these have been used to develop my understanding of the ideas of reality taking over fantasy.

The writer uses symbols to represent significant ideas. The first symbol is the writer used was the Ace of Diamonds card, this card was made from the idea of a book the gang read, by cutting off the backs of x-mas cards and stamping a red diamond on it to signify the gang being strong like a Ace of Diamonds card in a deck. This card also represents power, untouchably and immortality to the boys. After the “Ace of Diamonds Gang” finished with one of their exploits they would leave a Ace of Diamonds card pined to the door of the exploit house. The colour red of the card represented death, sadness, blood and anger. This represents the gang and what in their attitude towards their exploits. the wirter used these quotes to campare them to the heroes of history such as “The Black Hand”, “The Fish Christians” and “The League of Spartacus”

Another symbol that the writer uses in the text is the symbol of the Library card. The Library card was used in the text to show identity, ordinariness, reality and normality. but it symbolises adolescence and reality, In the text the narrator had the job in the mission was to pin the Ace of Diamonds card up on the exploits door, in the text Jorgesson is their exploit who lives in an army hut in the second-hand yard. As the short story went along the narrator soon found out after they had departed from their exploit, the narrator actually had pined his Library card up on to the door instead of pining the Ace of Diamonds card on the exploits door or in this case Jorgesson’s door. In the text they called themselves the “heroes of history”, but when the narrator pined the Library card on the door instead of Ace of Diamonds card, this represented their weakness, geckiness and realty. By one act of clumsiness can really show how one act can change a reader’s perspective on a character or a group of them, this also show how they weren't that untouchable after all. In stead of being “heroes of history” they actualy were normal citizens who carry library cards.

In conclusion I have talked about the two main symbols in the text being the “Ace of Diamonds card” and the “Library card”, which represents the ideas of the text also being Fantasy world or a reality world. I later found this out from the text when I had read it to the end and studied it.

"The Paper Parcel"

Essay Question:

Analyse how symbols have been used to develop your understanding of people OR ideas in at least TWO short stories written texts that you have studied.

In the short text “The Paper Parcel” symbols are used in the text to develop understanding of people. The Paper Parcel symbolises the transience of sexual preferment and how quickly it can pass and it also symbolises the gap between parents and teenagers.

The idea of the transience of sexual preferment is an important part in this text. When he enters the ball, he takes notice of all the other boys’ costumes “fire chief” and  “captain marvel” then he compared the difference “and I was a parcel”. The technique that he had used to get across his cause for his own costume is repetition “a brown paper parcels with bare legs and sandshoes a brown paper parcel which crinkled when I moved”. Kelly Howick was his date at the ball but she was ignoring what he was saying and was trying her best to get away from him. The narrator had felt of a new feeling of sexual preferment was gone and replaced with shame, from this he learned how fast your sexual status can past you. He later finds out what it’s like to have your sexual status taken away by a brown paper parcel and he feels ashamed and embarrassed he had lost his sexual preferment.

There is a big difference between adult parties and teenagers parties. The difference is the one of the ideas of the text, i.e. the difference view points between parents and children. The narrator’s parents don’t understand what’s so important this particular party is, they think it’s just a dress up party, but it’s actually important to the narrator. His mother advised him to not go early because “nobody arrives at a dance on time”. The parcel is an efficient custom because it is easy to make, easy to put together and it was a smash hit at a party that his mums attended, the party that his mum attended was a adult party. Children tend to judge people on what they look like or what there custom was or is at the party but parents, no so much. The narrator refusing and couldn’t believe that his parents can’t see that the paper parcel costume was not a good idea.

The Paper Parcel by Owen Marshall is about a boy that has a bad experience at his ball. The narrator blames his parents for sending him to the ball as a paper parcel and later, he rips up the paper parcel and burns it with a lighter while smoking his fathers cigarettes in the shed to show how he feels about his parents and the paper parcel.

"Samson & Delilah"

Australians (mainly whites) have pushed this issue of young teens in Australia living the harder life, mainly because they have no interest or have not paid any attention to this issue that has become much worse. But the art house, adventure and love story film was just the thing to get this kind issue global and so this issue can become no more. The director Warwick Thornton, one of Alice Springs own creation to the world produced such a movie that meant so much but mainly stressing his point of this issue.

Samson & Delilah is a “True Love” story about two young teens who fall in love in a strange way. The experiences they face together is very realistic to young teenagers living in Australia and everyone around the world. For example: Samson gets beaten up and then later finds out Delilah is also in the same condition, Samson takes Delilah and runs away from their heritage. As young teens find it hard to survive when they are on their own, Samson & Delilah find there way home through a freak accident when Delilah is hit by a car and Samson not knowing what had happen because of the petrol sniffing addiction. They end up living a long happy life together in Delilah’s home land.

Thornton creates a very realistic atmosphere through a number of techniques use such as location to set the realistic form of the film. The colour is used to show us how characters are represented in a way of how they are judge and treated in this film. Music was used to set the emotions of Samson & Delilah whether they were happy or sad for example: Samson was sitting up on the foreground looking down at his village and Thornton used the music of a violin to set the emotion of sadness. These techniques that Thornton uses, not only gave me more understanding about young Aborigines life in the outback’s of  Australia, but gave the media and more importantly the world the understanding in which young teenagers like Samson & Delilah live from day to day.

There are many strong expressions shown through Rowan McNamara & Marissa Gibson acting because of the lack of dialogue presented in the film. Thornton has used expressions to tell the story which is a more complex way tell a story through film. I thought this was a very cleaver way of expressing a story because of the armature actors he was he was faced with. When Samson & Delilah had been both beaten almost to death and when they ran away that’s something that’s believable to young teenagers these days such as me. I can relate to the hard trials they had faced and things like running away and getting lost sometimes, brings closer the reality of life and hoe one’s life can turn upside down in a blink of an eye, such as Scott Thornton bringing much reality of homeless people and deepens the idea of acting.

Samson & Delilah is based around young life for Aborigines in Australia. The actors of this film are not professionals but suit the acting style of this film. The director Warwick Thornton is very good because of the type of film he produce and the techniques he use in the film to make it very realistic. I thought this film had much meaning to it through actions other than words. It also gave me more understanding about young Aborigine life in the outback’s of Australia. This is why I found the film very interesting.
